Just discovered the problem is specific to the book file. The cover is a separate file, and grids, guides and frames all turn on and off as normal. So it's not the application. Somewhere, something's changed – presumably in Preferences – on the book file. But I can't find what.

I have an Excel list of subscribers and I want to send reminders to those whose subs have lapsed. One column has the dates of lapsed subs, another has their email addresses. Is there a way of 'merging' these into a standard letter, to send reminders automatically to everyone whose sub has lapsed?

Hi Sorours – thanks, you're right: whatever I changed in character and para styles, the text boxes held on to their left-to-right formatting. Completely new file has resolved it. BUT I've now got the automatic page numbering running right-to-left! Page 7 is on the left, page 8 on the right...

I want to montage small photos onto a large one. I erase the background of the small photos, but they only erase to white. I need feathery edges, so a clipping path is not appropriate. How do I erase a background to transparent?

Or just press tab key (making sure you've first clicked outside any text box). All the palettes disappear. Stretch your window across the screen, press tab key again, and the palettes come back over the window.
