Thanks for your opinions; of course I don't attempt to use win98 to access the internet, that would be silly and would probably be unable to access most servers now in any case. That's done on my Windows 11 computer. :)
As for why I'm still running this old OS, it's fast, runs certain software...
OK, after a bit of research, and trial & error, I've got to the bottom of the issue, so will record it here should anyone else have the same question:
(This only applies to Windows 98SE, but may work in other Win9X systems)
Edit the registry - go to HKCU\Control Panel and open the 'Desktop'...
OK, thanks again for your input.
The setting can be changed somehow, as IEradicator removes that 400mS delay, presumably to try to make the system feel faster. Zero delay has its own problems - I would just like a slightly shorter delay, plus it's got me curious!
I await any further...
Thanks Strongm for your suggestion, but it didn't work on this Windows 98SE installation.
There was no key for 'Mouse' so I created one and created the dword you suggested within it, with an initial setting of zero to allow an easily-observable effect, but nowt. (Yes, I did restart the...
Hi all;
No comments about my Win98 use please!
I use single-click for my mouse, and I know there's a way to adjust the delay between hovering the mouse over a folder, and it being selected.
I can't, however, remember where the registry setting for this is, and internet searching has become...
Indeed - if you have sub-pages and they are linked to (somewhere) chances are they will be indexed too.
I'd also like to add my vote that placing an unwanted obstruction for anyone wishing to visit your site will be counter-productive; I too would click off and go elsewhere. Perhaps consider...
Hi guys.
I'm running an old PC (Win98SE) which acts as a peer to peer communal file dump/server for the people in my house.
More out of interest than necessity really, but is there any way to stop the Win98 GUI from loading (thus saving some resources) but still have full functionality from the...
I agree with that last comment - I find such sites annoying and usually go elsewhere. Similarly with those "Click here to enter" pages.
Have a good think to be sure this approach is really in the interests of the website visitor.

It is remotely possible you are getting RF breakthrough from a nearby transmitter - do you live near one of these? If it is transmitting in AM mode you would then hear the transmitted signal.
There are ways to help this is you think it could be the problem.

1DMF - JS is fine where needed, but I see it used to produce hyperlinks (amongst other basic HTML operations), where a simple HTML link would be simpler and more reliable. To my mind this is just bad design.
Sorry, rant over. <grin>

Is this a JavaScript issue?
To my mind far too many web sites rely too heavily on JavaScript meaning they don't display correctly (or at all) on a JavaScript disabled browser. I'm wondering if this is what's going on here?

As a side note, your image file naming system seems a bit clumsy - maybe you could sort out some shorter file names for these with some descriptive component combined with the numerical part? It may help further down the line when you try to remember what those images were!
Similarly with your...
Pretty much sums it up. No wonder those whose first language is not English, struggle so much with it!

So for info's sake, what was actually creating the buzzing?
I was going to suggest fan bearings, but evidently that's not the case.
Maybe one of the cables was making contact with fan blades somewhere?
Glad you got it sorted though.

And playing around is something you cold do with www.GRC's 'Spinrite'.
As the drive is failing, get your data off first, as Spinrite will give the drive a good caning. For best explanation of what it does (and it's not free - sorry) go to their site.
But in short, the software will make a...
Can't edit these posts, can we??
I managed to mangle the last paragraph of my post - it should read something like:
This will turn up pages linking to this useful bit of software which will enable all USB memory cards/sticks that I've encountered to work.
Download the driver and install it...
Why destroy a perfectly good hard drive? Send it to me - I collect them!
Seriously though, is the erased data really that sensitive? I would be surprised if Mr Average Joe would even know how to recover deleted files, let alone actually want to bother.
If this computer once did hold really...
Surely you can't leverage something?
To me that sounds silly.
You can lever something, or apply leverage. As for it being in the dictionary, I don't think that counts for anything. Heck - in the UK our Oxford Dictionary now carries the word 'innit'.
Maybe I should learn french...
