    The error indicates your client config is set to Named Pipes which is the default. You might want to try a different client setting on the nt4 box, probably tcp/ip.

    I had some trouble similar to what you are describing with the upgrade utility hanging, I don't recall exactly at which step.  I don't know what caused it but for me the problem resolved itself after booting the server.  Good luck!
