admoore,
If I am doing major work on my Cisco lab, I power it down, but I have changed serial cables with the routers up and running and with the interfaces "Up" or "Down".
You just DON'T want to hot swap and WICs or Network modules!!!!!
Hope this helps !!!

Tron626,
Mike Meyers (not the TV star) is the CompTIA guru when it comes to the best study guides for a CompTIA exams.
Just Google CompTIA A+ study guide or books and Mike Meyers and check them out at Amazon.
Also your best bet is to get an old PC off of eBay and practice tearing it down...
Jack,
Does not look good but your best place for this info is from CompTIA -
here is what I found -
I hope this helps!

kmcferrin,
That is exactly how I felt when I got my own first computer in 1995 from Gateway 2000, I did not want to even touch it for fear of screwing something or frying something.....
Then I got a job at a college taking care of about 500 Gateway 2000 (and later Dell) computers in my...
moose4me,
It all depends on if you are really a "5" in networking and what you really know and understand, especially about Cisco equipment and troubleshooting Cisco equipment.
I had one of my students in a Cisco Academy who was taking the class, he was already a CCNA. I asked him why he was...
irnfizz,
Welcome to Tek Tips !!!
I just looked at the prices for the E-Learning at CompTIA and WOW, kind of high IMHO!!!
From a quick read the CompTIA Strata + just appears to be a Computers 101 type course telling the world you have a basic understanding of computers and IT. Whether you...
Mazhar123,
When you reboot do you get anything before the CCCCCCCCCCC.... or is it always CCCCCCCCCC ???
Normally I have had issues when someone has set the config regerstry wrong and it is communicating at a different baud rate but it normally looks like the router is cussing at you with all...
Burt,
I don't think it could hurt having 3 switches to really understand root bridge elections, broadcast storms, VTP, etc. Seems that they always had a fairly easy switch congig if at all, most of the sims always tended to be around routing......but they do have questions about STP, VTP etc...
Burt,
I still think the Sybex CCNA Study Guide by Todd Lammel is the best, he just came out with the latest edition in April 2011 - $30 at Amazon.
The Cisco Learning Network at www.cisco.com under "Training and Events" is a GREAT online site for lots of Cisco CCNA infomation and help in the...
Lobo66,
As for "good practice package" - I assume you are looking to take the CCNA, get 2 good books, one from Cisco Press and the other the Sybex CCNA Study Guide by Todd Lammel, latest copy just came out in the end of April, $30 at Amazon.
You also need tons of hands on practice, best is a...
Bill,
Congrats, I will agree that having 2 good books, one Cisco Press and I always like Todd Lammel and the CCNA Study Guide as well as lots and lots of hands on practice with Cisco routers and switches or at the very lease a good sim of emulator!!!
Good luck on your next test!!

Testkings are "cheating" - they tend to be EXACT copies of test questions but have lots of misspellings and wrong info by the way the information is gathered.
And Cisco is well aware of them ..... :-)
If you want a "paper" cert then get them but don't be surprised if you get blown...
Burt,
Soooooo glad to have you back, I owe Billy a call and Todd an email, been busy with work as I am getting some Dell 960s with Intel I7s in them ready for the CS lab, doing XP Pro x64 for the Summer and then I think WIN 7 x64 for the Fall with Office 2010.
We also have a new Dell rack...
Texasnas,
Most "senior network engineers" with 20 years experience I know would be CCIEs or at least a CCNP and would not be concerned with CCNA which is an entry level certification..............
And again, most network engineers I deal with find a hardware or software solution based on the...
Texasnas,
If you think it is a "racket" then don't play :-) The people I know in the industry have certs and keep up their certs because it either makes them more money, gives them some creditability or helps them stay current in an ever changing world of technology !!!
As for my "title" of...
Texasnas,
If you want to be Cisco certified you play by CISCOs rules!!!
If you want to be a CCNA you must renew your cert every 3 years by retaking and passing the current CCNA exam or by taking and passing a higher level exam.
All Cisco exams are given at moderated test centers across the...

You will need some DCE/DTE cables to connect the WIC 1Ts to the 2500 serial ports, you can get these on eBay or at www.anthypanda.com or www.cableandkits.com You can get these in 3ft lengths for about $8 to $12.

Acer1608,
As for the equipment you have - forget the PIX 515, CCNA does not cover the PIX in any way so it will only confuse you, Use the 2500 as a Frame Relay switch and connect (if it only has 2 serial) the 2801 and 2600 through the 2500 FR Switch, you will need WIC 1Ts for the 2801 and 2600...
biskin72,
If you are moving into Cisco and Microsoft certs make sure that you have a home lab and that you are getting tons of HANDS ON PRACTICE in the lab.
It does not have to be a big lab - 3 routers like Cisco 2610XM routers, 2 switches like Cisco 2950 and 2 older PCs (I bought 2 Dell 260...
