    Local group policy software restriction

Thanks, that was it... I took a 2nd look at it and realized I was just being retarded and not right clicking "additional rules" and selecting "new path rule". Thanks for your help! This whole caffeine free thing is killing me...

    Local group policy software restriction

I've done it before, but I cannot freakin find it now. Someone please remind me where the setting in local group policy is that lets to disallow access to a specific program. I remember you open it up and add the name of the particular software program, iexplore.exe for example, to the disallow...

External antenna for Aircard in the back of a box truck

I need to figure out the best solution for getting a better signal to a Verizon Aircard used in a laptop in the back of a box truck. Being that the truck sides are metal, the connection quality is pretty sketchy. I could go for a antenna that is portable, as the laptops are only in use when the...

Show who's using each IP port?

This probably won't help in a Linux environment, but in Windows I use netstat -aon, open task manager, use view > select columns to add process ID (PID), and then match the PID for the port I'm interested in to the PID in task manager.

Linux for a Windows power user?

Thanks for the advice, I did some more digging, and I've decided to throw a couple different distros into Virtual Machines, poke around, and pick the one I like best for my laptop. Since I've already seen the basics of Ubuntu, I'm looking at downloading 2 or 3 of Debian, openSUSE, and Fedora.

Linux for a Windows power user?

Cliff notes: I need recommendations on a Linux disto to use for sys admin type tasks and office work. I'm currently exclusively a Windows user, but with recent dissatisfaction with Vista and Vista SP2 (AKA: Windows 7), as well as more network administration tasks where I am using ported Linux...

Can I prevent Windows apps from selecting entire words in text?

I don't know of anything off hand. I usually hold shift and press the arrow keys to select small areas of text or hold shift & Ctrl to select punctuation or space delineated "chunks" of text. I haven't seen anything in group policy editor or the registry regarding text selection, but who knows...

    Grant Access to Single Website

Depending on the firewall, yes. Many commercial firewalls have the option of creating a white list based off an IP or MAC address. If that is the case with yours, it should be relatively simple. If not, I'm not completely sure... you can use a fake proxy to effectively stop all internet...

Wi-Fi Cuts in and Out - Vista 32 Business Edition

I've seen several instances where the manufacturers wireless manager works better than the Vista version. I never used them in XPPro, so was in the habit of un-installing them along with all the other bloatware on new systems. I've found myself having to re-install the stupid things from the...

Disabling IE and browse from search box in XPPRO.

I've thrown together some of my own ideas and some of the research from this thread, along with various threats of bodily harm if anyone tampers with the stations, and I think we are good to go, thanks for all the help!

Disabling IE and browse from search box in XPPRO.

I have a few point of sale systems that are not on the domain and subject to overall group policy, and I need to disable all access to internet explorer. I need to also make sure that users can't get around this by typing a web address in a search box in a menu such as My Computer. I know I can...

Small hi res display 4 dual setup

I can't think of any monitors under 20" with that resolution myself. Is there a lower resolution that you could use so that the dual monitors still line up? I didn't do the math, but something like 1440x900 is readily available in a 17" WS LCD. In an ####x1200 resolution monitor, I have only...

Interesting discovery...PCI wireless does not work without sound!

My mistake, totally missed the Win2k part there. Blowing away the stack was the next thought, you did that. Other than that, it might be worth checking to see if the soundcard/wired nic/wireless nic are trying to use any of the same resources, if they are though you should get a "!" and a...

    Intel vs. AMD (part deux)

Intel is better than AMD, NVidia is better than ATI, and the Atlanta Braves are better than your team. Stay tuned for updates based on what I build my next system with, and what city I move to next. ;-) Seriously though, I have been happy with the AMD builds and the Intel builds I have used...

Question about 32 bit vs 84 bit?

The limited address space of 32bit OS's limits the amount of RAM they can effectively recognize. On most 32bit OS machines I have installed 4gigs of RAM on, the OS is able to recognize in the 2.5 to 3gb range. Generally the reason I am putting 4 instead of 3 gigs in the machine, is simply due...

Interesting discovery...PCI wireless does not work without sound!

Depending on OS, you may have resource conflicts with the new device. Additionally, try getting the drivers installed properly but not using the D-Link software package, just let the OS handle the wireless connection and see how that works. In XPPro and Vista machines, I continually have major...

    Multiple Monitor Use

As a busy IT guy for your company, when this gets proposed to me, I am not going to read a bunch of studies someone hands me, I am going to ask you the following questions. 1. Why do you need this? 2. Would a larger, wide screen monitor be just as effective if not superior. 3. How long until...

    Last Known Good config?

My understanding of Last Know Good Config was that it makes a change back to a previous config, but I don't know that as fact. If everything is working propperly, I probably wouldn't mess with it, just check your logs for errors.

Delete automaticly all Mucis files from all WinXP workstations

Have you considered just issuing a memo re-stating the company policy, and stating that all of those files will be deleted on X/X/X date? Might be better than just wiping everything out, and a lot of the problems will be cleaned up be the users.

Building gaming PC for my son. Looking for feedback on configuration

No, you won't need 2 video cards. If your son bought every new game that came out, the day it came out, and wanted to run it at the highest possible settings, you would want 2 video cards to achieve that. However, the games you mentioned will all run at max settings on a mid range system...
