Hmmm... so now I've realized that the way the table of contents has been arranged isn't in any order whatsoever... lesser headings and major headings are all over the place, in no particular manner. Any thoughts on this?
OK, well I got the "applies random styles" bit taken care of... apparently InDesign doesn't like "small caps" in paragraph styles on a table of contents. As soon as I remove that setting, the problem disappears... but if I set it back, everything gets all messed up. BIZARRE. But this is here...
