Yes - they are definitely grayscale.

When I select the picture (using the open arrow), the Fill and Stroke boxes are set to none and all of the swatches are greyed out...so I can't select a color. Is there a way around that?

The book will, of course, start with a right hand page. But - each of the chapters begin on a left-hand page. That doesn't seem that unusual to me - given that InDesign has the book feature which is supposed to allow you to break books into chapters, I'm really suprised there isn't some way to...

I'd like to have a series of black and white photos appear with a slight tint to blend with a background color used for facing pages. With a picture box selected (grayscale picture in place), if I place a spot color in the fill box at 10%....it appears to slightly tint the photo to that color...
