This sound very much like a relay host not understand where to go. As salserocito suggested check the GWIA setting but you can also look at the mslocal\mshold from the GWIA server to see if there are message files queuing up waiting to go out. Worth checking the MTA as well.

The internet mail convention can all be setup via the NWADMIN under the user's own internet addressing, but this get better as the whole post office can also be setup to the internet convention too ; firstname.lastname@company.com
My test for you is how do you think Groupwise handling a reply...
