Log out completely, and log back in as root.
Then start your Netscape or Mozilla browser and go to this URL:
http://cgi.netscape.com/cgi-bin/pi_moreinfo.cgi?PID=10048
It takes some time, but should install without any problems.

I have used primarily KDE in previous distros, but went back to Gnome on Red Hat 8.0 and have been happy with it.
I play a few games as well, some that came with Linux and some others that are ported to Linux (like Unreal Tournament). No problems so far.

There is a Red Hat 8.0 build of Alsa Player already available, meaning that you don't necessarily have to build it if you don't want to.
However, based on the information you've shared so far, I am not sure that Alsa Player will fix your problem.
