If the server is Exchange 2000, ensure the client machine's DNS settings only include the internal DNS. Remove any dns settings pointing to external DNS.

There's 2 tricks to try. But only if you have only one server in your site. If you have more than one, don't try this.
First the safest one. If it doesn't work, then post again and I'll give you the risky one.

No AD required as far as I understand your situation. The change shouldn't hurt and can be undone if needed, very quickly. Just schedule weekend time. This change should work.
Try this:
1) Right Click on My Computer
2) Go into Properties> Network Identification>Properties
3) Click on More & add the entire domain name after the computer name.
For Eg: computername.domainname.com
4) Reboot the machine once that is done.
