Check out IPCop... http://www.ipcop.org Cheers, Dave V.

SuSE 7.0 & ATI Rage IIc chipset.

I've loaded up SuSE Linux 7.0 (kernel 2.2.16) on a couple of old e-machines 366i PC's. These use the ATI RageIIc AGP graphics chipset. All is well in text mode, but running X results in a fragmented screen with various lines over it (right hand side of screen only). Has anyone else suffered...

    Trusted Solaris

Has anyone been involved in Trusted Solaris 8, as opposed to the Standard Environment? Am I right in thinking that if were to set up two webservers on the same machine, each open to the Internet, that although users would be sending request packets that are unlabelled, the server would detect...

    Disk Space monitoring

Do you really need the smit.log & smit.script file to be kept? If not, just zero it out by using the > symbol as follows... > /smit.log > /smit.script Also, PDT is OK, but it is meant more for trend analysis over a (period) 30 day period rather than a live monitoring tool. Cheers, Dave V.

    Disk Space monitoring

Try cricket.sourceforge.net for a tool that might just help. Cheers, Dave Vickers.

    daily check errpt

I wrote a script that used the -s option, logged the error id and then reported how many matching error id's had been reported, along with the description. I can certainly drag out the script if you wish..? Cheers, Dave V.

    changing disk for rootvg?

Do you want to keep the current size of PP's...? If so, you could extend the max number of PP's in the rotvg and extend it to include the new disk - then migratepv.

Full System Backup in AIX 4.3.3

As skiddy says use the mksysb for the rootvg - or as you only need to backup a few filesystems you could use the backup command rather than the savevg. Cheers, Dave V.

how do I backup files to tape and read the contents of the tape?

The I/O error can be due to a number of things - but can you check something... are you trying to view a mksysb tape? Dave V.

    RESTORE

Unfortunately tar does not work like that - the file has been saved using relative pathnames. This means that you can restore it back to your system RELATIVE to your current location - so if you are in /home/hsingh when you restored, the file would be restored to...

    RAID1 or RAID5

Usually, for databases you would use RAID-1 (mirroring) rather than RAID-5 (striping+parity). However, space considerations may affect your decision on this. Hope it helps, Dave V.

    RESTORE

A couple of things here... 1. Are you sure that the tape device is rmt1..? 2. Was the backup done using absolute or relative paths..? This is easily checked by using the tar tvf command / options - take a close look at the file / path; does it start with ./ or just / - you'll need to use the...

    RESTORE

660 bytes - is that right, not MB...? The deciding factor for something this small is where it positioned on the tape - the actual restoration time will be very small, but positioning the tape may take longer. Hope it helps, Dave V.

I have become an owner of a IBM rs/

The 43P 150 (7043-150D) uses the GXT300P graphics adapter. The entry spec 150 model (7043-150C) uses the GXT130P graphics adapter and the higher spec 7043-150E uses the GXT2000P graphics adapter. Hope it helps. Dave V.

    Upgrading to AIX 4.3.3

As an aside, to get into service mode for these machines, reboot and press F5 on the console as it starts listing keyboard, speaker and so on. Cheers, Dave V.

    Logging FTP activity

You can achieve this by editing the /etc/syslog.conf file. Add the following line: daemon.debug /var/adm/messages ...assuming the messages file is where you want to log them. I used exactly this to do the same thing - monitor FTP transactions. Hope it helps. Dave V.

    history of user activities

This could complicate the scripting - I assume that each person that logs on gets their own history file set (as opposed to one common one listing all commands), is this the case as well ?

    history of user activities

Are you in a situation where more than one person uses a particular userid...?

    find vgname

Find out the major number for the volume group by using the ls command.. ls -l /dev/<vg_name> Note the major number. Export the volume group and run synclvodm which should remove the entries for that VG from the ODM. Now re-import it specifying the correct name and major number. importvg -V...

    replacing rootvg/hd

You can only unmount / & /usr if you boot into maintenance mode either from CD or tape. If you try to boot into maint mode from the hdisk it is automatically busy, and therefore canot be unmounted.
