I've been using Acronis True Image for a 2 years, never let me down. Just check for the proper version.

I feel like i'm in paradise when i'm in office.
problems met at home:
Rebooting (this might be Hardware problem as well,since haven't solved yet), can't install updates, unlike in XP you need to create system restore checkpoint, msconfig's autoboot...

I believe, overwritten data can't be recovered...
So, i do agree with DataInSight - hopeless...
Wohever, you could take your HD to the nearest HD recovery center and see what they would say (you'll feel like you've done your best to recover disk).

I would say that you should check that all your hardware and software is going run under Vista. If you are happy that your hardware is really fast, then go for Vista.
Agree, the thing i have some softwares (including disk management, backup) those aren't compatible with Vista...
