Does anybody know the following issue:

Illustrator 10 will not start, it hangs up while trying to read the fonts... The CPU works under full load, nothing happens.. :-(

all this on XP... any ideas? Any help would be appreciated...

(Curious detail: Illustrator 8 works fine on the SAME machine on the SAME OS; Illustrator 10 works fine on the SAME machine under Win2k. ?!?!)

This happens to me too and I cant figure out what exactly it is. It has something to do with AI temp/undo files not being allowed to complete a function corretly (usually because you just crashed) so it hangs when ever you try to re-run the app. The odd thing is if you let it sit long enough, it will start Illustrator eventually but a lot of functions will grind to a halt in the same manner, ie. copying, new documents and some other ones. Re-installing doesnt work.

Heres the real kicker, if you try opening Photoshop first and then Illustrator it seems to work. I just got in the habit of opening PS first, but one time I forgot and didnt notice cause AI opened just fine. Musta worked itself out, Weird!

By the way, this is a windows thing, I've never seen a Mac do anything like this. BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!

Sorry, didnt read your post carefully. That fix I just gave was for if AI hangs at 'loading startup settings...'

For your prob, try setting your date back to 2001 or 2000, I dont know why but it works. BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!

thanks, jaquan, for your tips... unfortunately, neither nor worked out. I think I tried all I could - no chance. It even got worse, since InDesign 2.0 also quit functioning.

Switching to Win2k erases all the problems; both programmes run quickly and without any problems. So this made me think too: it's a f... Windows-problem. Set XP on hold and come back in one, two years... ;-)

..and yes, one or two times Illustrator as well as InDesign started after lets say 10 minutes (!) of attempting to read the fonts or what ever... strange!!!

Hi

One of the problems could also be that you have too many fonts open. Try reducing the open fonts with a font utility like Adobe Type Manager or Suitcase. Fonts take up a lot of memory and thus are very annoying for your system.

hope this helps

Right as usual Grill, dont ever add fonts to your system folder other than the ones that installers put in there. Use a font manager for everything else. I perfer suitcase. BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!
