Can anyone explain to me why 30% of the time ZMODEM transfer fails? It could be uploading or downloading, I have read and implemented various scripts using $XFERSTATUS from this group to ensure that I am transferring correctly and still 3 out of 10 times the transfer of data fails. We are using PSTN lines, it this the expected failure rate. Dail up and login always works but I can't seem to guarantee the transfers will go OK. Should I be retrying the transfer? if so how many times? Anyone had similar experiences?

Yes it happens with manual transfer but only on large files i.e. 1.8Mb Zipped. Should I use an alternative protocol which maybe manages compressed files better?

Zmodem should have no problems with that file, but you can also try Kermit if the system you are connecting to has that protocol available.

Also, here is a technical bulletin that may help you diagnose a problem with the connection and/or your modem (they discuss the DOS version of Procomm, but most content is applicable to the Windows product):

Also, I saw on the Symantec forum where one of the original developers of ASPECT created an updated DLL to workaround the hard-coded limit of 20 CRC errors in the program. I could probably get you in touch with him and see if the new DLL is available for public consumption. That would most likely resolve this problem.

Thanks Knob, I'll digest the tech bulletin and see if I can make any adjustments. Kind Regards
