Hi,
Just moved to UNIX world..
I need to produce zip files to send them out thru email.
Do gunzip or tar will do it ? I mean will normal Windows user be able to read this file with Windows (winzip)?
Just don't know about WinZip on Unix ? If it's there maybe anybody has a sample ?

Thanks to all.

If you have gunzip, you probably have gzip too (GNU zip).

Hope This Help

You can use tar to create the archive, then gzip to compress it, then rename the *.tar.gz file to *.tgz so that winzip can open it easily.

If you have gtar and gzip, you can directly create a .tgz file with gtar -czf options.

Hope This Help

zip is a standard file format, no matter what kind of OS, just like .txt , you can use it every where.

We use a nice program called pkzip for unix. One of our vendors ftp's the file to our unix machine and then we unzip it. Just another option.
