I recently installed a new HDD(SSD) and re-loaded my Windows 7 pro 64bit and MSO H&B 2013, and some other key software.
I kept my original HDD as secondary storage (mainly so I wouldn't loose any data during a backup).

Now when I try to save a MSO Excel file the only place it will allow me to save the document is in "My Documents". No other directories, (I wanted to keep saving some of my files on my old HDD in their original folders)

Some other software I use(FileZilla) was reinstalled and it creates a default directory; C:\Program Files\Arkona\ArkonaFiles.
I can't save to this folder, which I did before the new HDD and reload; now it's F:\Program Files\Arkona\Akonafiles (the original directory/folder on the old HDD).

The file I'm working with gets uploaded to my Pc/HDD on Wednesday evenings as a .cvs file. I open it, modify it then save it as an Excel workbook, then I have to email it. I used to save it back to the original folder but since I replaced my HDD it won't let me do that.
I can't even save it to the new default directory/folder C:\Program Files\Arkona\Arkonfiles, ONLY to my 'My Documents' directory.

Here's the complete error / message:

C:\Program Files\Arkona\Arkonafiles\pirrs.xlsx
You don't have permission to save to this location.
Contact the administrator to obtain permission.
Would you like to save in the MY Documents folder instead?
Yes / No

I 'am' the administrator and it's a stand alone Pc, we don't use any MSO / Server global settings.

What do I need to do to fix this? [hairpull]

Are you getting the impression that Microsoft does not want you saving user files to "C:\Program Files\", even as an administrator? This is normal behavior for the OS and completely reasonable. If you got away with it on your last system installation, it was through a tweak.

I'm not "tweaking" anything intentionally!
I run FileZilla and setup my end to receive and where to save(as instructed).

The default destination folder C:\Program Files\Arkona\Arkonafiles gets setup during installation of FileZilla.

spamjim,
Thanks for your reply but I've always been able to add subfolder and save to that directy/folder before.
Now, that is the only directory folder I've been working with and saving to. It gets created when I download the FileZilla program from our vender / DMS provider.

If they're tweaking something, then I guess I'm understanding why it's not working now when it worked before.
I will get with them to see if they have a built-in tweak for the FileZilla program they have us use.

I did change the directories back to the C:\Program Files\Arkona\Arkonafiles today and I re-ran the download and it did go to this directory/folder. I was also able to create a sub-folder in this directory but I still couldn't modify the .csv file and save it as an excel workbook .xlsx file.

Take ownership of the directory, add permission to "users" or a specific user to "modify" files\sub-directories ( left click mouse, open properties, go to security), propagate this down through the directory. There is an inherent security issue with this, but will allow you and the program you use to modify files, and to run. This is the result of either MS updates screwing things up, or the program not providing proper permissions on the programs directory and or files.

Who is providing this instruction? I would assume this is a developer that has not updated their software since XP and should have troubleshooting guides to bend their software to work in modern Windows.

Filezilla does not set up this folder during installation. You've likely got a custom Filezilla installer and whoever built it needs to support you.

Darn tootin' right! [bigsmile]

spamjim and technome,

Thank you for your responses and comments.
I have an email into our vendor asking those questions of them. Waiting to here back.

Not really, as I am sure you are aware. It is the result of the developers ignoring very explicit rules documented by Microsoft in their SDK guidelines, and application certification requirements (previously the Windows Software Program). User or app data for an application must never be stored in %ProgramFiles% (or %ProgramFiles(x86)% for 32-bit apps running on x64) because of the security permissions configured for these folders; Microsoft provides alternative folders, with more amenable permissions, for this sort of data. (e.g. ProgramData and AppData)

strongm,

Thank you for the better explanation of why it shouldn't be working the way that it was and why it isn't working now.
I guess I'll need to get used to the change.
It's just when you get used to the way something is working and then it changes, it makes you(some of us) wonder why.
Also, thank you for the link, I read that over.

I also, readjusted my FileZilla to upload/download to a new directory. Now that I know / understand why I can get used to the changes.

Thank you again.

I'm just curious. Any SSD replacement that I have purchased has come with clone software or has a link to download it. If you use the clone software, it will make an exact copy (except for SSD required settings) of all your existing data and settings. There is NO need to reinstall anything. After I verified that the clone was correct and boot able I did a backup and then formatted the old hard drive as a second drive to use for storage

Beilstwh,
Thanks for your comments / suggestions.
Yes, I've cloned a couple of HDD's to SSD replacements; this time my 2nd reason for the SSD upgrade/replacement was because I was going to have to re-install Win7 anyway to fix a problem.

Last year(or more) when they were pushing the Win10 'free' upgrades, my Pc got the upgrade in the middle of the day before I could verify it was compatible with our vendors and in house systems. I had to do the restore back to Win7, ever since then I had issues with some of the underlying Windows functions and the only way I could get them back was a fresh install. They weren't drastic daily problems but scheduling wouldn't work anymore, popup messages from the taskbar stop working, the removal of USB drives, the popup to tell you it was safe to remove-stopped working, I never knew if it was safe to unplug a USB flash drive, etc., those types of things.

So, I figured it was the perfect time to add a SSD drive.
