yet another question from the current resident network newbie ;-)

how do i find out the domain name of the network. i need to set a new client desktop pc up. i created the add new computer disk from the server pc but the client keeps saying the domain name is incorrect.

any help much appreciated....

thanks in advance

Silly question but how is this pc connected into the network. Have seen this issue before when a pc is connected into a router and the router is talking to the pc, but the router is not actually connected into the lan. This would also explain why your pc says it has a lan connection (lan connection only means it can see another network item (router, switch, server).

Have you tried connecting the patch lead into a working pc and seeing if all is okay (basically a 1st line test) and vice versa, try the non working pc on a guaranteed patch lead.

Remember to try releasing and renewing the ip when on the new connection. Do you have any network experience, i.e. could you trace the patched connection and check the switch/router for a link?.

Anyway we have now confirmed you are not picking up an IP address from DHCP so we are a little bit furtehr down the road :)

Another point is how many pc's (clients, servers and routers) do you have on your network?? Your subnet only allows for 254 address's (unless you have multiple vlans)

the busted pc is connected to the same router as the working pc(my pc). i thought about the cable test and swapped them around released and renewed. my pc can still access the lan fine through the other cable but the new one doesnt

as for network experience...no. not yet. been thrown in the deep end. i was brought in as app dev but its only a little company so i ended up with the network, hardware, web dev, desktop support etc etc etc.:) you know how it goes. i've been struggling thro manuals and microsoft website luckily i'm a member here from the VB side so i thought i'd ask for help. thanks.

theres only about 30 pc's at most attached to the lan. maybe 40.

Ah see, ipconfig /all :)
Yeh you are not getting an address, you can't see your domain controller. I would say you have a network card problem or a port problem on your router as you say the cable is ok. You could try assigning a static address but you would probably find that a ping still won't work.

like you said, hondy, "its gonna be something fundamental". i'd already tried 3 net cards in this pc but still having the same problems. just took the one i know works out of my workstation and tried it in this pc and boom. i'm on the lan......

cant believe its something as simple as a faulty network card that has caused all this.

sorry for taking up the time but really appreciate all the help guys.

cheers. ;o)
