I got a table and a form with a SMOKING field, This field has to have three checkboxes, the yes for smoking, no for not smoking, unkown for smoking status unkown.

The boleean(yes/no) data type in my table, seems to accomodate yes/no and now i don't know how to accomodate "unkown" because there's those people in patients table who we don't don't if they smoke or not.Is this only possible in a form? Then How in a form.

MsAccess don't accomodate Null value in a boolean field.

Hope This Helps, PH.

some have suggested that i can only manage to to get what i want if i my yes/no field is bit data type.what does that mean?? and how to do that??Since i would like to have these 3 checkboxes viz( yes/no/unkown)one of the checkboxes have to ticked depending on which one the user clicks on the form.

The problem is ,in my table, the smoking field can accomodate yes/no which is bound. It can't accomodate the "UNKOWN" which symbolizes the third box on my form.what should i do.should i create an unbound checkbox and name it unkown.is it gonna work. This form i'm using was repliaced from a paper based one.

Hi thembela

There is also (access 2003) a three state toggle button you could use!

Have you thought about using a three button option group? It's made for just this type of situation.
