Up until I had to reformat the hard drive, I was using the Yamaha s-yxg50 software synth, alomg with cakewalk pro audio, and xgedit95.

After I re-formatted and installed xp pro, then the soundcaard drivers, I can no longer install the Yamaha soft synth, it installs ok, but after a restart, the speaker icon appears, then an error message, 'An error has occured and windows explorer has to close' when I click on close, the entire desktop disappears, and I can't even use the 'CTRL-ALT-DEL' sequence to get the task manager, so that I can perform a restart, I have to press the reset button, enter windows into safe mode, uninstall the yamaha soft synth, then restart, and after a restart there's no problem with windows at all.

I contacted Yamaha company that created the soft synth, and all they said was "there is no problem with the software, uninstall it and re-install it, or reformat and start again'

But,,,,, it works perfect on another computer running the same winxp pro.

Check the event log, it may give you enough info to track down the problem. Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer - check the Application and System logs. Hopefully you'll find something more helpful than "an error has occurred"!
