XPP non-simple File Sharing absurdity 1

Hi all - I decided to turn off "Simple File Sharing" (in folders->folder options->view, of all the places on earth!), and am stuck with an anomaly, and your help is most appreciated.

If a user tries to share a file over the network, but the user does not have an account on the machine, it appears that XPP is refusing access ("access denied"), unless "Everyone" is allowed in the permissions list for that file.

Now the user may have an account on the machine with a different name. So XPP should be asking the user to enter login name and password, and authenticate the access as a locally defined user. But it is not doing that.

How can I force XPP to authenticate an access based on a locally already defined user, and not based on the name coming over the network? All help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

====

more detail:

Machine A is XPP and user AU has account.
Machine B is XPP and user BU has account.
FIle AF on A has AU on permissions list, both for sharing and security, but Everyone is removed from the lists.
BU on B is trying to access AF. BU has password for AU.
BU wants to be authenticated on A as AU.
But XPP does not request a login. XPP rejects the access to AF by BU as "Access Denied".

why did you turn simplified sharing off - presumably it was working ok?

have a look in the firewall settings (on both machines - I presume both are now set to non-simplified), that file & printer sharing is ticked as an exception (this should happen automatically when you enable sharing, but sometimes that doesn't happen).

btw - you can set sharing on a file - so don't understand your comment about file AF

Hi wolluf - I already have access to the shared files (as user AU), and File and Printer Sharing is ticked ON both machines. This is not the problem.

The problem is that machine A is giving me access session as BU user only and NOT AU. Since BU does not have an account on A, he become a "Guest". But AF does NOT allow Guest permission.

What I want is access to the file AF, and a session as a AU user. So machine A should be asking me to logon and ask password and then create a SESSION for BU (of B) as a AU user (on A).

You see, the file AF can be read by AU but not by BU (or Guest), as per its permission list.

The reason simple file sharing is turned off is so that I get more sharing (not less). Turning it off allows me to tell which user can share a file, and in what manner.

To rephrase the problem: How do I create a non-Guest shared file session on A (if BU does not have account on A). How do I change my shared file session logon on A (from Guest to AU, over the net)?

thanks to all

Thanks smah !!

The answer was hidden somewhere in that link you provided.

When user B accesses a shared resource on machine A, and if user B does not have an account on A, then user B becomes a "Guest", and hence cannot create a session with another login name, as there is no prompt to logon.

To correct this problem, you have to DISABLE the Guest account on A!! (typical M$ idiocy). And you cannot do this via Control Panel | User Accounts! This has to be done through My Computer | Manage | Users.

I tried this, and got a prompt to logon.

Do you believe this !?!?!?!?

In order to logon to another computer over the network using a different user name, you need to ...... "disable the Guest account" !!!

UNBELIEVABLE

Those M$ so-called "engineers" must eat donkey brains for breakfast, everyday.

Glad you got it figured out, I had forgotten that little tidbit.

Hello,

Do you know how can i disable simple file sharing (tab 'security' to appear when i see the properties of a folder) on windows xp home?

Thanks

To disable simple file sharing (and get the real file sharing), do My Computer | Tools | Folder Options | View | Simple File Sharing, and check it OFF.

Cannot be done in XPH.
