I am trying to upgrade our workstations to XP Pro from Windows 98, The PC's are running a 700 Celeron with 128 mb of memory. The board is a BCM IN810P W/on board sound and video. I am using XP Pro that was purchesed from Microsoft Licensing. The problem that I am having is that when I load the cd it goes through the steps until it gets to where it is loading the setup files. It hangs when it starts to load them, I have tried both options on the upgrade,(overwrite the old system and clean install). On Microsofts site I found where Win95 has this problem and tried the fix for it with no results. Anyone have an idea?

Thanks for the help, I tried all of the suggestions and none of them worked.

I am sorry the informational links I provided offered no help to you.

Your workstations are not very good candidates for XP Pro. It might be better to sort the issues with Win98 SE. I mean this quite sincerely, I think the time and effort spent to make these workstations reliable under XP is time and effort better used elsewhere.

The diagnostic tests I offered in the links above should have show any pre-existing hardware and software issues with your existing Win98 installation. Some of these may be insurmountable, such as a BIOS upgrade or the need for additonal hard disk space or RAM.

Hello I having a similar problem with a cpu running raid 0.
The only way to make it load the os was to put the bios settings back to their conservative default values after which when all the hardware was added I resetthem to their previous values and haven't had a problem for months. Xp Is like a good companion you need to be easy with it to get it to give you it's best. Hope this helps have a Blessed day.

Bcastner,
I understand that these are not the best boards in the world. But with all the work stations that I have to convert cost is a factor. When I test the hardware with XP it seems to have no problem what it finds it only tells me that I will probly lose my printer drivers. Not a big deal. I also would like to thank you for your time and effort into this.

I will also tryout the web site for the board and also the default settings for the bio's at this point I have nothing to lose.

If XP prompts with a specific installation error please post again here for additional help. Often if you not the "minutes remaining" on the installation screen it provides a very strong clue as to what the installation problem might be. For example, if it stops with 34 minutes remaining, the issue is a quite different one than if it stops with 27 minutes remaining in the installation.

You might print out: Problems during Installation of an Upgrade from Win9x

Understanding budget constraints very well, I'll contribute what little I can to help.

Do you know for sure that the XP install CD you are using is good?

How is the hard drive partitioned?

Have you tried to install XP on more than one machine?

Here is how I would proceed. Pick one workstation as a test vehicle. Remove any add-in cards, and any external devices, basically leaving keyboard, mouse, display, hard drive and CD-ROM drive as the only devices. Boot from the XP CD-ROM drive and let it format the install partition. Let the install proceed from there and see how it goes.

Another try would be to boot from a Windows 98 boot disk, format the C: drive, load smartdrv, copy the I386 directory from the CD to C:\I386, then execute the command WINNT from within C:\I386.

Good luck, and keep us posted.
