I keep being unable to get my machine (athlon 2500, xp Pro 512 mb ram), to load windows, wont load last known good config, or any safe modes. Shows XP loading screen then jumps past a blue screen too quick to read it back to the black preload screen which asks for normal load, LKGC or safe mode, any ideas?

Antecedents? Had some trouble accessing wireless network, rebooted router fixed that temporarily, then tried to open browser and the OS froze (wouldn't run any programs or task manager tho the mouse moved around OK ) powered down and got to where I am now trying to fire it up again....

Thx for your consideration!

If you have SP2 loaded, there is an option on the Safe Mode screen not to automatically restart on error, this will allow you to see the actual error. If you don't have SP2, then you can try using a digital camera to snap the error message.

To check your RAM.

To check your Hard Drive.

The drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software to check your drive for problems.

You can also load the Recovery Console and run ChkDsk /r to check for problems. TRY THIS FIRST!

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console for Windows XP (Q307654)

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

appreciate the advice, will get too it...

Just had this happen on a client's machine. Boot into Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r.

Hope you're still there...I took a pick of the screen and it refers to the error as unmountable_boot_volume

recovery console fails unable to load file \i386\ntkrnlmp.exe the error code is 7

Are you loading the recovery console from the hard drive or the windows xp cd?

xp cd...also ran ram diagnostics: no errors there.

ms h&s suggests if "Ntkrnlmp.exe Could Not Be Loaded. The Error Code Is 7" is not ram its a BIOS prob....

got it to load recovery console...checking & repairing disk now...

this almost sounds like a hard drive failure...use the manufacturers hard drive utility and see if it pops up any errors

especially with SMART

bad clusters will cause these symptoms too

got recovery console to load chkdsk /r seems to have taken care of it...thx again for adive & help!!
