I have just installed service pack 1, and now XP won't start properly. after the WinXp logo and moving blue progress bar thingy, it goes black, and then restarts from the beginning instead of going to the logon screen. it is worth mentioning that i had previously changed the logon screen to a customized one that i got from the net which worked well for years. this poblem only happened after i installed SP1. any thoughts?? many thanks in advance!

adamr1001,

When this happens, can you boot in safe mode by holding down F8 while your computer attempts to load Windows? If you can't boot into safe mode, can you boot with the Last Known Good configuration?

both safe mode and Last know good config. don't work. it always happens at the exact same spot; right before the logon screen should appear, just after the xp logo and blue loader.

(thanks for your help) any other thoughts? - have the xp cd - maybe i can do a repair??

A repair installation of XP should help as per
However it is possible that hardware is causing the problem, corruption on HD, corrupt/missing Video Card Drivers etc...

try the repair first and then if that does not work post back and we can suggest some tests for your HArdware.

See if this uninstall of SP2 from the Recovery Console works with SP1.

To get either of the Service Packs installed (do get SP2, you can then skip SP1) your Windows installation must be in a pristine condition with no alterations to the system.

Remember the problems you had when you first installed Windows? Remember the problems you had when you first installed SP1? SP2 will be the same, it is the way of all things "computer".

Patches are a way of life. Test on a small scale before any large roll out.

I am happy with SP2 and recommend it, but I keep an eye on all the posts and stories about SP2. In other words stay informed and watch a developing situation.
