I have an intermittent problem with my Network. I hope you can help. Here's my configuration:

1 XP Desktop with two NIC cards both are connected to a D-link 614+ Wireless Router

1 Dell 8500 Wireless LapTop

Both machines can see get to the internet without a problem and when I recycle the LapTop it can ping the DeskTop by name and by IP. After about 10 mins. the laptop can only ping the desktop by IP only and I can't use the printer attached to the desktop or see any of it's files anymore. The host has never been able to ping the LapTop by name or by IP.

I have set up the following on the desktop

o Set up ICS for the Internet
o Assigned a static IP i.e. 192.168.0.1 for the LAN connection
o Turned off all fire walls

The LapTop Settings are:

o It also has a static IP set on the 1394 connection.
o In the Network connections pane there are two valid connections 1394 Connection and a Wireless Network Connection (Dell TrueMobile WLAN)

I changed the default gateway in the router. It was originally set to 192.168.0.1 but this conflicted with XP which wanted to assign 192.168.0.1 to the desktop.

o DHCP is enabled in the router. I am not sure if this is necessary or not.

This is all new to me a quite confusing.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If I understand this correctly you have two NIC's in your desktop connected to the same router (i.e. same LAN)? This could be your problem as each of these cards will have a different IP address yet they will both correspond to one computer name. So you will have one computer name with two IP addresses ... definately not good.

There is software that allows this but it uses three IP addresses ... one for each NIC and then a third that is exposed to the network ... this way the computer name is associated only with the one ip address on the network (the third one).

The questions you need to answer are:
- why you are running two NIC's?
- are both or one of the NIC's wireless?

A quick fix (or test) would be to disconnect one of them.

. Disable DHCP on the router.
. Delete any 1394 Bridge Connection on the laptop
. Delete any 1394 Network Connection on the laptop

If you are assigning static IPs for the ICS Host and the ICS client, be certain that all other aspects of this manual connection are made, including renaming of the Computer Name, the HOSTS file entries, and the DNS suffix requirements:
The problem on the laptop is one of it being multi-homed:

I've got a DLINK 614+ and on my network i've got a laptop that kept dropping connection.

I solved the problem my upgrading the firmware, its an easy process of downloading from the DLINK site then accessing your router and select tools then firmware, since then it hasnt dropped at all!

Hope this helps,

Dave

We had this same problem. We're running a Win2K domain and LAN/DMZ/WAN Firewall with private & public servers.

Read this:

It's CRAZY to think WIN XP can have it's netbios packets blocked on it's own segment but...

Enabling NetBios between the LAN/DMZ segments did it for us.

Dave Peter's Solution above will probably work best for non DMZ enabled firewalls as Microsoft recomends getting the solution from the manufacturer and opening firewalls beyond the DMZ can be downright stupid.
