Just upgraded from XP to WIN8 and I am stunned.
I want to use my box as a computer not a glorified arcade game. What are the silly coloured buttons about? Who thought the 'Charms Bar' was a good idea and how am I supposed to verify my email address when I cannot receive POP emails. I can't go any further until I sort the email thing out and my ISP tells me that to set up IMAP email addresses, they expect me to pay them some extra sheckles for the privilege, that won't be happening I can assure you.

Am I to assume that smartphones and the like do not handle POP emails so we have had to fall in line with the Twittering technophobes who blight the world we live in. I am sure I will eventually get used to it but as I type this I can't even see the time on the task bar. This is NOT progress!

The update took over an hour during which time I was unable to use my computer.
I have recovered the machine and am now in the process of putting all the files back - deep joy!

Getting really ragged off now, not only have I had to wait over an hour for the update to complete, the update has restored all the apps back onto the Mickey Mouse Metro screen. Not only that but some oik has decided that I will no longer need a link to IE on my desktop so it has been removed.
This system was designed by idiots!

I have installed F secure anti virus on both windows 8 boxes and now neither of them can get on the network or internet. It now says that no network is available but the network still works with the other 3 machines, 1 x Vista and 2 x XP. I don't enjoy twiddling with hardware at the best of times but this is doing my head in, big style.

I am so glad that the modern designers were not around during the Industrial Revolution, The Tollpuddle Martyrs would not have been needed as the machines would have smashed themselves up.

On a point of historical accuracy, Keith, you are confusing the Tolpuddle Martyrs with the Luddites.

However, that doesn't detract from you main argument, with which I agree completely. If I had an hour to spare, I could list all the lousy Windows 8 design features - at least, those that I have happened to come across.

Cheers Mike - I have already been castigated by my better half for my historical inaccuracy but it is not that bad. The modern way seems to be forget about efficiency, accuracy and functionality, as long as it is available in millions of colours, nobody gives a Monkey's Chuff!

If I could bring you to task about a part of your reply - you mention the phrase 'design features'. I think the word 'design' should be removed from the whole Windows 8 concept.

I know you from your Foxpro expertise and you have skills which these light weight designers can only dream about. The only problem is, these nitwits are designing our future - we are stuffed - I think I might get a job as a window cleaner. How hard can it be, you turn up and the windows are dirty, after throwing some water at them and a bit of rubbing they are clean again. I suppose if the Windows 8 designers were doing the job, they would replace the glass with brightly coloured opaque panels, so you couldn't see the dirt from the inside.
