After a recent system restore on an HP Pavilion, everything came back as it should, apart from the system will not recognise that I have an onboard soundcard running Avance97 drivers. All the drivers load, but in "Sounds and Audio" it says there is no audio device under volume or sound playback. However the device is available for sound recording and midi. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I've downloaded the latest drivers. I've even disabled it added a plug in soundcard, loaded the drivers and the same happens with that.
I'm getting to the point of doing a destructive system restore - not that I want to.
Help would be appreciated.

Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware Tab > Device Manager. Are there any items with Question Marks or Exclamation Marks? If so double click on them and it should tell you what is wrong with them.

I'm afraid not Greg. The system reports no problems and everything is enabled for use and running correctly according to Device Manager. In "Sounds.." everything is ticked for USE as well. Initially on reboot after the restore under sounds in the Device Manager a windows wdm device turned up with an exclamation mark. However after I uninstalled then reinstalled my soundcard drivers, it didn't come back.

It may be that the Windows Audio service is not started.

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services. Take a look at "Windows Audio". It's status should be started and Startup Type set to Automatic.

Damned if I haven't looked in there. I'll check on it tonight and hopefully it will be the problem. I'll post a reply tomorrow.

At least my "helpful post star" is working again.

Cheers
