XP system Hardware change - renders system UNUSABLE !!!

My *other* system was having issues so I swapped out the motherboard and when XP "tried" to come back up, it complained of problems with new hardware having been added to the system and recommended I *remove* hard disks and controllers I had possibly added after running a Anti-Virus program to ensure the system had not been infected !
Obviously the issues are that ALL the system board functions have changed ( ABIT P3 -> ASUS AMD chip ).
But when I try to Reinstall from the CD ( just overwrite the current installation ) it stops sometime into the copy of files required for Installation ?
So much for the Sad Story !
Has anyone swapped hardware on XP ?
Did it survive ?

I'm yet to see a motherboard swap where XP just accepted the change and booted right up. Always crashed upon boot, even re-installing over the top of XP, or doing one of their repair setups still resulted in nothing usable.

Have you tried a repair reinstall?

How are you trying to reinstall - just on top of existing?

btw - what were the issues, and why did you think swapping mobo would sort them (ie, is it possible that doesn't resolve the issues - and that's why the reinstall doesn't work).

What about backup and clean install (ie, wipe the drive) approach?

Have you tried going in to safe mode, removing all IDE controllers from device mangler, restart, and boot to the CD to run the repair? Cheers,

The reason for the swap was a dead MB.
With the *new* board in place the system would not boot up under any circumstances, and could NOT get to the F8 boot menu. It was totally unusable.

I downloaded the Boot Floppy creation image from the MS web site ( booting from CD was still giving me issues, when trying to re-install/Repair)
I had to FORMAT and re-install from scratch... this is really not acceptable, with several computer in the house, at least one or two will go through H/W upgrade yearly and if that means a COMPLETE re-install and loss of all installed Apps ( because you have to re-install them all to have registry entries rebuilt ) I will be in no hurry to move from 98/98SE to XP on those systems if this will be the result when I upgrade or move pieces from one to the other as I upgrade ...

Well for the good news, it is possible to move XP Hard Drives from one computer to another. I have done this numerous times, quite safely.

You say that you didn't get to the F8 stage while booting. Did XP actually begin to boot? Did the new BIOS recognize the HD? Regards, SecHead

It's all gone now... but as far as I can remember it would blue screen with an error code of 0x00007 ( number of zeros may be off) indicating that I should remove the H/W i installed or turn off the virus protections I had enabled.
