My computer just stopped working this morning. On reboot gets to loading XP and nothing happens. In Safe Mode loads some drivers then just stops. Last line is *****\Windows\System32\Mup.sys I have tried booting from CD but Setup laods everything and then freezes when gets to loading Windows. What should I do now? Thanks

Have you installed any new hardware items lately...if so you may want to try removing them? Also, do you have any external devices connected via USB/Serial/Parallel...try disconnected them and rebooting.

Stopping at Mup.sys means nothing, it is the last driver loaded prior to entering full 32-bit mode.

As member mjbianco15 asked, did you do anything new?

Hit F8 early and often when starting your machine and try 'Last Known Good Configuration.'

No new hardware. I have removed all USB stuff. Still no joy. Goes through Bios and then blank screen. No activity on HD.

Last Known good also just stops. Do you think there may be something fatally wrong with HD?

Have you installed any new or updated drivers...maybe from the Microsoft Update Site? What type of PC or laptop is crashing?

The computer is one I built myself over a year ago. Have had no problems till today. Cannot remember last time I changed anything.

That looks interesting. Will give it a try. Thanks

You might also try booting to a DOS floppy, and running "fdisk /mbr"...
Won't hurt anything, and I've seen it recover systems with similar issues...
Just my two pennies...

I think it's a shame that entire families can be torn apart by something as simple as wild dogs...!

Well thanks for your help everyone but I am still getting nowhere. Have discovered that the HD is visible in the BIOS but not to the XP CD or - worst of all - in DOS. HAve swapped cables and put a different HD in. BIOS recognizes different HDs with no problem but nothing else sees them.

Are all hard drives not visable to windows or just your HD where your operating system is on?you might think about a bios update , something might be going on with you motherboard. Also check your partition on the hard drive.

Both Hard Drives are invisible to Windows and DOS. Have now tried each as master and now got one as Slave. BIOS copes with the changes but if go to DOS no C or D drives

Have you tried "fdisk /mbr"?????

Yes I have. It does not appear to do anything. Returns to Dos screen immediately.

You won't see anyhing happen when running fdisk /mbr...
Dropping quickly back to a dos prompt is absolutely normal.
Have you tried a HDD that has no partitions on it yet?
If so, does the XP CD see it?
Are you connecting the drive(s) to a RAID controller?
Even if you're not using a RAID setup, connecting drives to the RAID controller
(perhaps for the ultra ATA benefits) can result in similar headaches, if
the correct drivers don't get loaded for the controller.
If you ARE using anything besides a standard old IDE controller,
I would strongly advise you to chase down the lates, greatest, drivers
for the MOBO, as well as the controller(s).

Will check the MOBO drivers. See if I can find anything to update.
