After installing XP SP2 on XP Pro some users cannot start up IE6 at all - other users are not affected.
Removing SP2 solves the problem.
Have tried to rename an OK profile to the name of a user that has the problem - still the same: The user can log on, everything works - EXCEPT the IE 6!
I have experienced this on not only one, but several computers - some profiles OK, others cannot start up IE.
All machines are always updated with latest patches, only SP2 creates the problem.
Shouldn't be the Firewall since it works for some users.

Any ideas?

TIA

When things are failing, what access permissions do these users have to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ IExplore.exe ?

For other SP2 help try this site.

Hi linney,

the problem is all standard users have the same permissions.
I don't believe it's a permission problem, it generates an "Explorer has encountered a problem, and needs to close the application". And it happens EVERY time the user tries to start up Explorer. But the program files as such are OK, because OTHER users can open the Explorer without any problems at all.

I have experienced this on not only one, but several computers". Are these all on the same Network or just various standalone machines?

Make sure your options in IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced are correct.

Uncheck the boxes for "Install on Demand" for IE and Other programs (two boxes).

Try running temporarily with the third box "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions" unchecked and see how this goes.

"This specifies that you want to disable features you installed for use with Internet Explorer that may have been created by companies other than Microsoft.
If you encounter problems with Internet Explorer that you cannot resolve, you can use this option to help determine if third-party features are causing the problems without uninstalling the feature. You must restart Internet Explorer after turning this option on or off."

If that stops your errors, you will know where the trouble is.
