XP SP2 error IE, Office: wininet.dll, etc 1

Another strange problem I noticed on another XP SP2 box. I didnt have these problems until I upgraded them SP2 a couple a months ago.
It happens when I am trying to open a particular web page. I got a Invalid Page Fault in module wininet.dll and IE crashed down. As possible fixes I tried artcle 160158 in the microsoft support site but it didnt help. It happens only on this machine for the same web site only when try to go through a lin, but when I type in the URL directly I have no problem. as I can open the same page on other machines without any problem. I reinstalled IE without any luck.
Just when I was thinking that the problem was confined to IE, it sharted happening when I tried to open one particular email in Outlook, it gave me similar errors and closed. It happens for a particular email which I can open fine using a web client.
Now word has started acting up. When trying to open some documents it says "word has encountered error and has to close". The same thing happens again when I try to open the same document again. I can open the document on other staions fine.

The error signature for word is as follows,
AppName: winword.exe AppVer: 10.0.2627.0 ModName: winword.exe Modver: 10.0.2627.0 Offset: 0030c8d0

The error signature for IE is as follows,
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: wininet.dll Modver: 6.0.2900.2518 Offset: 00004621

All the three applications say the same thing. "work or IE or outlook has encountered a problem and has to close". The machine is up to date with all patches. I looked into article IDs 276393, 812989, 821814 with no luck.

See if you have picked up any infection or similar.

Can you use WinWord or open this particular E-mail via Safe Mode without erroring?

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates (no problem if you substitute them with SP2) but your files and programs will be untouched.

If you feel SP2 is the cause you could try removing it to see how it goes.

I just want to correct the system files without affecting the data and the other programs already installed. Should I still be doing an in-place repair or something else. Main thing is after the repair I should be able to login back to my profile and have all my previous data and programs as before.

As you have SP2 any repair must be done with a SP2 slipstreamed XP CD, or SP2 must be removed and the non slipstreamed original XP CD can then be used to perform the repair.

will preserve your programs, settings and data. As with anything there is always a risk of something going wrong, so anything you can't afford to lose should have already been backed up. All I can say is that you don't see many reports of people losing data while performing the above procedure.

Since I SP2, can I use any XP CD slipstreamed with SP2?? The original CD from Dell came with SP1. The reason is the product IDs are different and I worry that might cause a problem.

If you use another XP CD to repair your current installation and enter that CD's Product Key during the repair you will have to Activate the new install before it will allow you to logon.

As previously mentioned you are better off to remove SP2 and then repair your installation with the correct CD and then reinstall SP2. If you like you can slipstream SP2 with your correct CD and use the created CD to repair the installation.

I am not sure what would happen if you were to use a second and different copy of XP (with SP2 slipstreamed) but enter your original Product Key, having never tried it. For it to work I would imagine both CD's would have to be a Retail version or both by the same OEM.
