After installing winXP SP2 on a users machine, the machine no longer functions properly. Upon starting up, it only starts 13 of the 30 services. You cannot double click anything to open, cannot read the event logs. Also the start button has disapared.

I have run a recovery to no avail, also had a second machine do the same thing, i have not found a virus. Weird thing is we have had 70 other pcs convert with no problem.

Anyone have some ideas?

After you remove it check out the installation logs to see if there were any problems in the first place with the install. Locate the Windows XP SP2 Setup log files. The Setup program logs information about the Windows XP SP2 installation to the following log files: • Setupapi.log • Svcpack.log • Spuninst.log

The log files are located in the Windows folder. For example, if Windows XP is installed to the C:\Windows folder, the log files are located in the C:\Windows folder.

the problem is that the windows updates are not showing in the add/remove programs option either. not all the services are starting.

Remove SP2.

Does it now function correctly under SP1?

When clean, re-install SP2.

Alternatively, slipstream SP2 into your current XP CD and create a new CD. Use this new CD to repair Windows.
