Hi all I have a problem with my XP pro clients.
some of the machines take forever to logon, I have set up deprof to remove old profiles daily,I have set up folder redirection (not roaming profiles)any ideas any one? I had to resort to a rebuild on one machine as it failed to even get past logon in 2hours!!! Some lead, some follow....I just Hope!

Is your environment strictly windows and tcp/ip? I have experienced problems with Novell and the ipx-protocol, shares on windows servers and on other machines takes a long time to access...

I have found that if you install Wins Server on the DC and fill in the Wins Tab on the client with the server IP address this speeds up logon.

I had this problema while back. It was with my dns server. The DNS server was looking outside my network for updates instead of looking at itself. When I did an ip config the clients were also looking outside the network for DNS updates. If your XP pc's are set up for DHCP go to cmd prompt type in ipconfig and make sure the correct ip and dns settings are there. Try going back and forth between static ip and dhcp and see if that makes a difference in the time.

I have checked out these ideas , but with no luck It is almost as if the hard drive is filling up with junk
(but it isn't I have looked) any other ideas?
Some lead, some follow....I just Hope!

Do you use roaming profiles? Sometimes because the size of the profile is so big it takes a while for it to copy to from the dc to the client. Try going through the profile and delete temp internet files and whatever is in my documents etc..

Nope we don't use roaming profiles just my docs redirection
Several machines now unable to log on after at least 1 hour
Have decided to format and reclone these to at least get them working, but what has caused this to happen? Some lead, some follow....I just Hope!

The first thing you must do in situations like this is to look in the Local PC's Event Viewer. 99% of the time the problem can be tracked down from there and using somewhere like eventid.net you will get a solution!

Just a thought - how are you recloning - are you using sysprep first or RIS. If you don't use one of these and use say PQDI then there could be a problem with SID's

I have used sysprep while cloning, this fault only appears on the new Dell gx240s. I have taken a look at the drive using FDISK and these have a partition for some Dell Utility, I am wondering if this is the problem as my other machines which work fine do not have this. I have tried to remove it, but find that I cannot even when Fdisk says I have. I even tried reformating a drive and still it persists any thoughts? Some lead, some follow....I just Hope!

I can't find it right now, but remember a setting for XP Pro systems which is set to ON by default... this setting causes the PC to look for all printers on the network when booting up. Once it's disabled boot times are MUCH better, especially if on a LAN set up .. oddly. ( had a small network I worked on set up and maintained by someone else who thought they were a LAN expert: only time I've seen this problem... disabling the printer search resolved the boot issue )

Thanks to all, Judging by all the web traffic it seems that this is a well known problem but on contacting DELL they denied all knowledge of it so I hope this works.
Some lead, some follow....I just Hope!
