XP sharing drives crash...

I was in the process of making my C: drive sharable when I lost power on my computer. Upon rebooting I could not boot up Windows (xp home), in either safe mode or last known config or any other choice on the F8 menu. I would see the splash screen and then the computer would revert to the F8 menu. I am told that the fact that the splash screen comes up is a good sign. What I will do next is a System Recover to a previous "restore point". If that does not work, I shall do a "non-destructive system recovery".

does this sound logical?
 
The folks at HP told me to try doing a system restore first, before I tried using the recover console. Can you tell me what "Chkdsk /r" does and why would I choose that over trying to get a restore point". "Last Known Configuration" does not work, by the way.
 
I am certain that if you restore your machine to the state it was in as it left the factory this will solve the issue. It just seems a draconian solution. You will lose everything you have placed on your machine since you bought it. All of your software, all of your Windows updates, all of your newly installed hardware.

The notion of running Recovery Console post-system restore is quite frankly a stupid suggestion.

 
I think we may have our wires crossed. Doing a system restore, will restore it to the calendar day of the restore point that I choose. I believe that will be the day before it crashed. Doing a system recovery with a repair will do a non-destructive (leaves my data) installation....correct?

Yes your understanding of the difference is correct. What I was concerned about was that HP places on the All Programs menu a System Recovery option that does exactly what I said it would: bring you to ground zero. From your first thread that was the utility I thought you and HP were suggesting to use.

I would feel more comfortable if you did do a chkdsk /r This form of chkdsk not only looks and tries to repair logical issues with the drive, but examine the drive for physical problems as well. Go to My Computer, right-click your C Drive, Properties, Tools, Error Checking, and click to set both boxes that show. When you apply this setting XP will warn you that the drive is in use and the disk checking needs to be scheduled for the next reboot. Approve this, and reboot. The process can take several minutes.

Again, my apologies. Too many times I have heard here in this forum and elsewhere of HP techs having individuals do a complete restoration rather than try and fix relatively simple boot issues.
 
actually, i went through the motions of doing system restore but it just reboots the computer...system restore is not operatoinal i guess. I don't have an XP CD. System Restore is accessed through HP system recovery.

I don't think I can do a chkdsk C: on the drive as you describe because i can't get into windows to choose my computer.
 
Hi guys.. im having the same type of problem on my other computer (HP Pavillion 531W). It will not boot (or reboot) in any mode!! cannot get into windows and 'even' when I do the system recovery (F10) it does not change anything!! No disks come with the computer (Thanks HP), so I need some creative help...

See my earlier note in this thread, "you can do it with floppies".

Use recovery console and do a:

chkdsk /r

Takes a while.

If you have a floppy drive, you need to download the floppy image creater:
If you do not have a floppy drive, insert the "HP System Restore" CD and boot from that.

I am sorry but you do have to do the complete "from the factory" restore.

If you can borrow an XP Full Retail CD, boot from that and choose the first R(epair) option.

If you do not have the HP restore CD, and cannot do any of the above, you need to call HP and ask what to do. You need the CDs to do anything if you have no floppy drive.

I used the CD from my other computer (FULL RETAIL).. did what you said but it stuck me with a password, and what I believe to be my password doesnt work??? agghh.. :)

how do i progress... i managed to get to the prompt...

Try a blank, empty meaning just hit return password.

If this fails, this is not your fault it is a difference in the protected storage service between SP1 and non-SP1 passwords.

Do a reset of the Administrator password if you can; most of the traditional utilities can use the CD Rom drive, and then you can use the floppies to access Recovery Consol.

OK... heres an update for you...
I received the 7 recovery CD's from HP and after loading them all (twice!!!) I startup and it goes to a blue screen with the following white text:
STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The session Manager Initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000003a (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

What on earth now???

HP has the ability to get into the Windows System Restore Point utility upon booting, however System Restore did not work because the Windows system was corrupted. I took the drive out, brought it to another desktop (Netvista). I made it a slave drive. Windows XP upon boot, repaired the drive eliminating some corrupted files. Everything worked and everything was there. I backed up the data files just in case.

Afterwards, I brought it back to the HP machine and decided I wanted to try a non-destructive recovery because the machine was running poorly. I pressed F10 on boot. The recover console did a non-destructive re-install. I then connected to the internet and let Windows do all its updates...and that's the end of story.

Happy ending.
