XP Runs Great, then freezes...

I have a new install of XP Pro.

Here goes, the install went without a hitch, the system works great. BUT, when I try and load a video to play via Media Player 9, the system freezes. I end up cuting power to get the machine to reboot. CTR-ALT-Delete does nothing.

I have small video wma's from my camcorder, and others that on my old system (win 2000) would display and run without a hitch. I can run the files on my XP Pro laptop, but on this new computer, notta. I can run music mp3 via Media Player and no problems. I can load media player and no events show up in the log indicating a problem.

I also had a problem with Java console from SUN, but found out the problem to be the XP SP1a service pack does not support Java and actually takes it out. I re-ran the repair on XP, then SP1, and Java appears to be functioning properly.

Any advise would be appreciated. Really stumped by this.

Issue one is a codec problem.

If you have a Pentium 4 processor, try unchecking in IE, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, the use of the jit compiler feature of java.

Thank You for the info, however I'm still in the dark as to why my system freezes when I attempt to play a video in Media Player 9. AVI or other. Codec problem, ok, but I'm not sure where to go from here. The video's, for instance one is my daughters birthday party, where she's blowing out her candles. This AVI is loaded on the harddrive in a directory with others. Not very big 400k. I do have others larger, all the way up to several gigabytes, but none will run. Right click, open with.., select media player, then OK. System freezes.

And when I mean Freezes up, even the hourglass on the mouse pointer freezes. Nothing moves, flashes, or anything. Only way out is to reset.

Nope, not a Pentium 4, AthelonXP 2200+.

If you could do two things for me:

1. An extended RAM test (say overnight):
Use the Microosft utility:

2. Find if possible the newest chipset manufacturer driver of your lan adapter card. Upgrade your NIC adapter.

3. Upgrade the driver of your video board.

4. Move the slider under Troubleshooting, Display Properties sheet, Advanced, down a notch.

5. Read and apply the suggestions:

6. If it still freezes, RMA the box to the OEM manufacturer.

Got your suggestions, working on it today (as we speak). I have already checked for BIOS updates, LAN UPdates, and Video updates. The only one I have not done (yet) was video. NVidea GForce 4200 128meg, when I updated via the Microsoft Update site, it sent an update for video, but I also noticed on the NVidea site an even newer driver. But I don't think the newer driver has any changes for my specific card.

The memory test, I have a &quot;mem test&quot; freeware software I have used in the past. PC333 DDR (2)512meg chips. I will have to wate to see the results.

The display acceleration, I have tried down one, even two notches and with write enable on / off.

This is not a new machine, just a fresh install from Windows 2000 pro, to Windows XP pro. Under Windows 2000pro all worked fine, but their we're some featues on XP that I thought would be of value to me on my HOME system. My Laptop has XP pro, what I'm on now and all the video's / Media Player works great.

I was also told that my specific home system would work better with XP pro simply because it has an AthelonXP 2200+ processor. Well, so far I can see an improvement in speed, everything else works, just not my video &quot;AVI's&quot; and Media Player...

Oh almost forgot this tid bit of information. Last night I attempted to watch the Headline News Video on the MSNBC website. Same result... system froze. Had to reset to get back to windows. wierd...

I can go to my music directory and select a tune and it plays fine. I even have audio books, that play fine. Just no video. WMA, AVI, MP3... nothing just freezes up.

At this time I cannot seem to determin what the cause it. I have run the Repair function for XP twice, with no luck.

Anyone had similar experiences ???

Have you downloaded the latest version and updates for the media player? Have you tried a different player?

I am going to try and re-load media player. I did notice that after I &quot;repaired&quot; XP, it did not put Media Player back to it's original setting. I think version 8.

No I haven't tried another player. I'm not fond of RealONE and I normally do have Quicktime loaded, but just haven't gotten that far yet.

I would like to try and consolodate my media players. I have InterVideo WinDVD for DVD playback, Windows Media Player for music and my video recordings, and usually Quicktime since one of my friends is a BiG Mac user.

I have the same problem....and a plus of &quot;Verifying Dmi Pool data&quot; on startup crash...It seems that the problem is cross platform because I have a :
-Celeron 850
-VT82C694X Motherboard
-Bios Award 6.00 PG
-Apollo 133A Chipset
-Geforce2 200 MX 32Mb

I have the same problem on videos that hangs, certain url's, and Norton Password Manager also.

I've tried dmicfg, nvidea updates, lot of registry changes, bios modifications, and nothing. Also visited pages of

http://www.tek-tips.com

but the problem still remains.

Any help will be most appreciated....if I discover something I will let you know.

I had the exact same problem and it agrivated me for a few months untill I stumbled on the fix by accident, I will first give you my symptoms so you can compare first .
I also have XP Pro and my system was freezing every time I played my COLOURFUL movies on Media Player 9 same it froze after less than a minute causing a hard shut down every time also when watching news on media player nine same thing happened even a game I have cxalled HALO would not run telling me I had a prob with my 3D video this was the key to fixing it but I still took a month and many testings of DX Diag untill I decided to just throw caution to the wind and re-install my Video driver NVIDA with a new one and all works Excellent now no more freezes and I can play that game of HALO now , So try the new Vid Driver it may be your problem , have a nice day,

It's not just a problem with XP Pro. I am a home user and have XP Home as the operating system.
I have freezes at odd times, moving graphics on some url's, but I have also had a freeze whilst the computer is not in use and only has the screensaver going, clearly this is sometthing to do with the graphics element of the sysytem. I am curently in correspondence with the supplier of the sysytem-MESH- to see if they have any resolution. I am Ok with tweaking but need specific instructiosn on what/how. The content of this thread has given me some useful pointers.Many thanks.

I am having the same problem, Have reformated c:/ and reloaded XP Pro and SP1 and original BIOS and drivers from the CD. Still crashed. Downloaded new nVidia drivers now plays DVD but has interference. Can't play .avi. WHen attmpting to play avi files the system tries to download updated codec but fails. I Updated Media Player and use Power DVD. Still have problems and DVD has horizontal interference through the vision. I Am looking for updated Codec files that I can install seperately. Is there somewhere that has a download for codec?

I don't know if this will help anyone but Here's what I ended up doing.

First of all, I Dumped my entire C partition, formated and reloaded XP.
Second, I loaded the XPsp1 from disk so as NOT to load the XPsp1a service pack.
Third, Windows Update, did all the necessary and not the recommended.
Fourth, Loaded Office XP and the service packs
Fifth, Widdows Update, Office Update.

Here's where I think I stumbled onto something. I tried to run an WMA file on Media Player, and it wouldn't run.?? After scratching my head, I realized it wasn't updating. Even if I tried to "force" it, it just sat there. So, Closed media player and using the file system, went to where the file was stored and "Clicked" on it. Immediatly Media Player opened, and low and behold a Internet page came up asking to UPdate and backup the license's. Hmmm

Well, once this was done, I haven't had any trouble.

I think I must of had some kind of corruption in Media Player originally, and when I attempted to remove and re-install, and even the rebuild, it somehow messed it's self up. The Total re-install of my system was regretable, but it was just a time issue, I didn't loose any data or information. I have seperate partitions on TWO drives so my C partition is basically just the OS and it's "program files" I even have a seperate partion for PageFile. Let me tell you, this alone is a BIG improvement in performance especially when you have 1gig of RAM.
