I have a Toshiba laptop T2250 Running WXP V2 and have somehow scrambled the unit. It will not let me do a system restore to an earlier point and I have misplaced my recovery discs. Can I restore the system to the point when I purchased it from the store without the original discs? and if so. HOW?
Please help.

System Restore will some times work when launched from Safe Mode when it fails in Normal Mode.

Did it come with Recovery Disks, or was it just supplied with a hidden recovery partition?

It is not easy to do what you want especially without the Recovery CD. however you can have a look at this.

Cannot Boot Windows due to Corrupt Registry
faq779-5362

Also, Windows stores the original Registry files from day 1, or from the last time you restored your System State via backup files or ASR (see the Help program for details of ASR and Backup and System State) in the folder C:\WINDOWS\repair. If you can replace the files in C:\WINDOWS\system32\config with the same named files from "Repair", and IF the machine boots, you will have a day 1 unactivated version of Windows.

Easier to replace or find the missing CD isn't it?

Replacement of CD or Product Keys
To replace a CD or Product Key, you must contact PSS. To locate the appropriate phone number for your product, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

I've had to replace a missing restore DVD for a Toshiba and they'll charge around $30 or so for one. Fairly minimal for a replacement.

The problem with just grabbing a Windows XP disk and installing Windows is that Toshiba doesnt give you a driver disk and they make it about impossible to discern what drivers you need with your laptop. They might have 4 different NIC drivers, 5 different video drivers and so on. You have to download them all and hope to get the right one.

I am telling you I will never buy another Toshiba again. We bought 4 of them for our company about a year and a half ago, we were just trying to see if it was worth saving a few bucks over Dell. No way, at least with Dell you get a Windows disk and a driver disk. They load some crap on the systems but we can at least wipe them clean and get a fresh copy of JUST Windows XP.

You're probably better off calling Toshiba and buying a recovery disk. Good luck!

Cheers
Rob
