Hello , Im trying to install a critical update for windows XP professional and when it trys to install it says my product key is invalid ,when I try to reinstall the software and I type in the product key from my disc it also says invalid product key .Any suggestions ?

Have you made any hardware changes since you last did an "update"? This is a legal, original WinXP CD? If so, you may have to contact Microsoft and explain your problem. Try to re-register. To open Registration Wizard, click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type regwiz /r.

Any of these apply?

326904 - Error Message: The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid

HOW TO: Change the Volume Licensing Product Key on a Windows XP SP1-Based Computer

310637 - Troubleshooting Invalid CD Key Error Message During Windows XP Setup

Try reregestering these two Dll's from Start Run.

regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll
Enter
regsvr32.exe licdll.dll
Enter

you are using a cracked copy of windows, either you can change the CD key using a cracker...but other then that...you should use LEGAL software.

yeah I have my A+, Network +, SAIR, MCP, MCSE and one of them lil things you know a CCNA but the real question is, Buddy can you spare a dime?

This also happened to me when Installing Service Pack 1. For me, Windows XP had been pre-installed by the OEM, and the Windows XP license number sticker was attached to the outside of my computer's case, and I had the original (pre-SP1) installation CD. I had not registered with Microsoft, but had Activated my Windows XP months before installing SP1. In my situation, I called the Microsoft support number which was displayed on the activation screen, answered all the automated questions, repeated the answers when an actual person asked me the same questions, explained the situation, gave Microsoft the name of the computer manufacturer from which I purchased the PC, and they simply issued me a replacement product key number which worked just fine.
