Hey

I have recently built a new computer as the old one I built crashed and was getting old. I have set all the components up and installed the old hard drive, which had XP pro as the operating system, hoping it would work. It boots to a screen saying that XP was not successful in booting up due to recent software or hardware changes. It gives options to start in safe mode or just start as normal but it just goes in a loop with whatever option i pick. I have files on the hard drive that I need so don’t want to reformat the drive a reinstall XP. Is there anything that mite work?

you could get a new hard drive, and install xp on that, ensure that you take your old hard drive that has the data on it, then once you have installed xp, insert your old hard drive as a slave drive.

Many Thanks

I can't get the in place upgrade from the CD to work as it won't let me repair unless I get rid of the hard disk partition, which will also lose my files.

I will have to try a new hard drive as a last resort.

cheers for the ideas.

what you could try is to, image the drive that you have now, with ghost or something similar.. then try the upgrade knowing that you have a image of your data on another drive.

Many Thanks

You can do a new install just rename the install folder. All of the data would still be on the drive.
