I have an gigabyte 8knxp motherboard. 1.5 gig of high speed ddr ram. I lost the operating system of the 80 gig serial drive. so purchased a new 90 gig drive and using the other as a second drive. The installation included xp-pro with sp2 updates, office 2003 and cs2, zone alarms and avg virus. It then down loaded 500 meg of updates. After installing laplinkFTP, the computer started running VERRRRRRRY slowly. it taked over 5 min to start and 10 min to load cs2 applications. I have run a reg cleaner, that removed 1400 records. But no change. Any Suggestions appreciated.

FAQ779-4784 may help.

windows XP running very slow
thread779-796508

Thank you Linney, I had a look at them before writting the post. They are very good but did not solve the problem. The problem still exists. Yes I have cleaned up old installation files and internet files, defraged and cleaned the reg. It is also running microsoft defender as well as AVG and zonealarms. Which found a problem installing a program but deleted the file. A problem is it is an old ver. of xp-pro. A problem exists if you insert the CD for XP saying a new ver. exists when it is updated from update cd.

Which version is older, the installed XP or the XP CD?

Slipstreaming allows you to create a SP2 version of the XP CD, if that might help?

Slipstream Service Packs

Consider matching the versions, or having the latest on CD and then repair your current install.

You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched. That wont matter too much if you use the RyanVM link.

Haveing done SP1 on XP and SP 4 on 2000 Pro before the days of autostream, used autostream on SP2 XP. Autostream is a very good and easy to use tool. I have been useing Nlite now and like that you can add the hot fixes to the build so if you have to do a repair install you don't have to download the 50+ hot fixes.

Thank everbody for your ideas. I am still having the same problem. But some excellent ideas that once solved should make it easier to fix in the future. I dont want to trash the drive if that is not the issue!

I have XP clients who got atrocious performance and were not running defrag or cleanup. Simply running them restored performance. Apparently XP is really bad with a unmanaged disk.

Disk utilization might be an issue. A marginal disk continuously trying rewrites would do it, for that there is nothing better than Stever Gibson's SpinRite tm but costs.

Is it easy to unload a bunch of stuff onto another drive, cleanup, defrag and test again? I'd guess you'd tried that, but how often have I overlooked the simple solution?

Just for fun, unplug your old drive from your system, see what results you get.

Unplugging the old drive makes no difference. It is quicker by still not what it should be.

assets,
I know it's a pain, but seeing that you've been with this problem for months now, it would make more sense to start over with another clean install formatting the drive. It may sound time consuming, but how many more months are you willing to waste?

I strongly recommend after you install Windows and apply all the updates, that you make a backup image onto DVD (I like DriveClone or Acronis TrueImage software) before you start installing all the 3rd-party apps. That way, as you're installing each application, you don't have to worry much about one like LaplinkFTP corrupting your system. You can quickly revert back to your image saving hours.

Are there any available Bios updates for the machine? Have you tried setting the Bios to its safe default settings?

You could look at some of these diagnostic tools and see if they can find any problems with your setup.

Check out for some tests you can run on your PC.

So have not upgraded the BIOS for over a year. Have not had a chance to have a look yet at the links, as I using intenet cafe, but hope to do so over christmas.

Had the same problem about 6 months ago. After going through a lot of different possible solutions this worked for me. Disable the service "system event notification", then restart. If this is the problem you will see a big improvement. After restart reset "system event notification" back to automatic. Restart again and see if the problem comes back.
