Hi, I have an XP Pro question

I am running XP Pro, service pack one on a

P3 450 MHtz; 256 RAM; GForce4 video card; 30G Maxator hard drive.

The computer freezes, nothing works, it is completely frozen. Last time it froze, the task bar/panel froze first, and then 10 minutes later, the whole thing froze.

There wasn't a lot of window open, or programs running, I was just on the Internet.

I tested the hard drive through the manufacture's website and it passed the tests.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, it would very much be appreciated.

Thanks, Miranda

Hi,

I just did a fresh re-install, but I do have spyware removal and an antivirus program.

The computer was working fine for a couple of hours until I shut it off and turned it back on. It was fine up to the point where the messenger sign-in window pops up, then it freezes, and you can't do any thing with it

Thanks,
Miranda

As reading my post over, I didn't mean to make it sound that messenger is the problem.

I have messenger loading on start up, but I don't think that is the problem. Sometimes it freezes at that point, sometimes it goes a little beyond.

Thanks,
Miranda

hmmm
go to run and type in

msconfig

click on the startup Tab and you should see a list of all the things that start up with your pc. I am guessing the pc hangs up when it tries to run one of these programs in the list ( maybe you have deleted the program or something like that )

uncheck all the items in this list that you dont want running when the pc starts up and then restart If you did everythign correct, you should notice that windows will start a lot faster and it might even get rid of your problem !

This morning the computer is working fine. I did go in to msconfig, and I have eight programs running, like video card, sound ect.

I am going to do another re-install with a different cd this time. Maybe there is something wrong with the cd.

Cheers,
Miranda

If you have already reinstalled the OS and it still hangs that would lead me to belive it is hardware related. Take the side panel off and check the fan on the CPU to ensure it is continually spinning. If the chip\motherboard is getting to hot it will cause the system to hang.
If that is not the problem you could also try running off one stick of memory at a time to rule that out, granted you have two 128 sticks.
