I have decided to use Zonealarm as my firewall. The Microsoft Firewall continues to stay in the Quick Launch toolbar and continues to "expand out" and say my machine isn't protected. How do I disable and remove the firewall icon from the quick launch toolbar?

Control panel, Security Center
It should show your windows firewall setting as off.
click the Recommendation box. You should be able to put a checkmark in the box "I have a firewall I will monitor"

My windows Firewall does show "Off" I do not see a Recomendation box. On the "On/Off" screen there are only two choices On Off. The tabs on the top are General, which is where the on/off switch. The exceptions tab and the advanced tab. Am I missing something?

On the left hand side the box will be labeled either Resources or Recommendations.

There should be an entry in the list "Change the way Security Center alerts me." Open that applet, and uncheck the firewall.

Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services/Security Center Set to disabled and all will be good.. :)

Bcastners last reply is what you need to do! It alerts you b/c of no anti-virus or out of date anti-virus. Just click do not alert me for (specific reason)!!!!!!

You can make a registry edit as well to achieve this end. Start a notepad session and copy/paste the below to be save as no_firewall.reg :

****** start copy/paste below this line
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center]
"FirewallDisableNotify"=dword:00000001
"FirewallOverride"=dword:00000001

******** end copy/paste above this line

Double click no_firewall.reg to merge the contents with your registry.

Thanks to all of you. I had forgotten about the "services" function int the administrative tools section of the control panel. I found "securty center", went to the properties settings and changed it from "auto" to "manual". Zonealarm tells me when anti-virus needs checking. Thanks again.
