I have set up WIndows 2003 Enterprise edition with xp pro sp2 clients. When they login in the morning they can see printers and shared folders fine. After perhaps, 10-30 minutes, the printers are no longer accessible. Sometimes you can't see them at all, or they just won't print unless they log out and log in again. If they browse in My Network Places to the server, it may tell them this resource is unavailable or another logon box pop appears to enter a username/password to gain access into the server (or any other PC in fact). If you enter the administrator and password, bingo, you're back on the network for 10 mins or so. Help, because I can't tell the users the admin password! We use a netgear switch.

Can't share after 15 minutes

Q: We just installed Windows 2003 server in our network. We can share files and printers. However, we will experience a connection issue after 15 minutes. When we try to access the server, we receive the server is not accessible or no longer accessible messages. Rebooting the server may work for another 15 minutes. What’s the problem?

A: Sound like master browser issue. The master browser is responsible for collecting host or server announcements, which are sent as datagrams every 12 minutes by each server on the network segment of the master browser. If one of the computers takes over the master browser role from the Windows 2003 server, that may cause the computer browsing problem.

To confirm that, use browstst to check the master browser status. Also check the event ID 8021 and 8032.

I checked the browser service in the event log and there has been no elections or error 8051 as suggested since we went live a week ago.

I did notice that one PC user who has administrative privileges, does not have these browsing and printer problems.

Is there a permissions setting for the other users to always have log on locally permission to use shared printers?
