I want to replace the NT workstation that is serving as a print server with a XP machine. Problem is I cannot install the printer on my NT server. Keeps telling me that the print driver is invalid. I have downloaded the latest NT driver for the printer from HP's website and have extracted it on the NT server.

Also - the NT workstation's printers show up as a shared item (in the printer list they show up as \\server\printername, but they do not show up that way on the XP machine. Why is that?

hey maybeiamleo - can i check you've already set up the xp machine with the printers and shared them out - and are just installing the shared printer to the NT server?

If so - you should be able to add the NT drivers to the XP printers - i think under the sharing tab there's a button called Additional drivers - installing the NT drivers there, should then allow you to install the printer onto the NT server.

hope this helps.

I tried that - keeps giving me an error that the print driver is invalid.
I get this whether adding them to the XP machine or if I try to add the printer on one of the servers (its NT4) in the domain.

What gives?

Try using the same HP driver set on the XP box as you are on the NT box (ie don't use the built in Microsoft drivers for your printer on XP, and then the HP drivers on NT).

I tried that - still didn't work. I get the same error - printer driver invalid.

Use the HP LaserJet 4 driver. This should be compatible with any HP laser printer.
