Hello all, I know you have seen this problem before and I have tried all the suggestions (thanks) but the spooler keeps stopping everytime I click on the Add Printer Wizard.
First it says Operation could not be completed, I then go restart the spooler via the instructions below and go back and add printer and again it stops.

"This error occurs because the Spooler service has not been started or has stopped working. To start the Spooler service, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
3. Double-click the Printer Spooler service, and then change the startup type to Automatic. This sets the Spooler service to start automatically when you restart the computer.

My printer is old but its in the Drivers List for XP.
Dont laugh its a Cannon BJ-10sx!!
I tried to go to the Control Panel, then Add Hardware and add it that way but it seems to be working then it runs into another problem and all it does is add new folders in the windows/system32/spool/drivers folder. (sorry machine is at home so not as specific about the exact path).

I have been trying this for a few weeks you guys are my last resort. I have even tried to add the service pack again but no luck. Any help will be apprecaiated. Thanks :)

have you tried to completely un-install the printer? Made sure that all the drivers for it are up to date also helps.. yes even older printers get updated if they are popular enough. When ever I have troublesome hardware I go into the registry (dont try this if you are uncomfortable with it.) (( Also MAKE A BACKUP OF THE REGISTRY PRIOR TO DOING ANY WORK IN IT!)) And search for ALL references to the troublesome hardware. once that is done. disconnect the hardware. shut down Windows and totally reboot and then try re-installing the printer from scratch. If XP has the drivers and correctly identifies your printer then you shouldnt have any trouble. if not then try adding the printer using the software set-up disk's that came with your printer.

Here is the step by step instructions from Cannon but there is nothing mentioned at their site nor Microsoft regarding compatibilty with windows XP. the printer support was dropped after win2k. Good luck and hope you get it solved.

This thread is about win2K, but it's certainly worth a read: thread83-193630

Thank you both, I shall give it a go :->
