hi there,
i have a family member who copied her .pst files from outlook express, when she turned her office laptop in. she has the files on a cd. how can these be imported back into outlook express. i have opened outlook express and when import is selected, it says "no messages found".
any ideas?

.pst files only work with "Outlook" not "Outlook Express". If she needs to import .pst files into "Outlook Express" though then I believe she first needs to have "Outlook" Installed on the computer. If she then chooses Import in "Outlook Express" and selects "Outlook" in the From field it will allow her to import all the data into "Outlook Express"

My guess is she was actually using "Outlook" at work, not "Outlook Express

If I remember correctly pst files are for outlook not outlook express. You need outlook to see/use these files.

tecky,
she was using outlook express 6.0 and messages are in outlook.pst file. if she imports the .pst file (containing messages) into outlook, can she then export them from outlook into outlook express?

Yes and No. She cant export them from Outlook but if she has both Outlook and Outlook Express installed on her computer she first has to configure Outlook to use the .pst file then she needs to do a import function from within Outlook Express.
Outlook Express will then automatically find and import the .pst file into Outlook Express. Its way complicated but thats Microsoft for you.

I am still confused as to how her Outlook Express emails got to be in a .pst file from work. Maybe her IT guys at work misunderstood when she asked them to save her emails into a .pst file.
This explains more about the Outlook Express .dbx files and where they are located:

thanks guys,
i think these postings are helping me. i was able to successfully import her .pst files into outlook. and i can see all the email messages to be ok. what now? do i export the emails from out look into a file and then into outlook express? or do i tell outlook express to go "into" outlook and grab the emails? or what? because outlook will import .pst files and outlook express doesn't seem to like it.

Great. Ok now open Outlook Express - choose File> Import> Messages.
Select Outlook from the list and thats it. Outlook Express will go and find the files and do the rest for you.

PS: Dont have Outlook open when you do this procedure.

thanks!
ok, outlook epxress (where i'm trying to get the messages into), is on a decktop pc. outlook is on a laptop and they're conncected together in a lan. so, when i open outlook express on the desktop pc, do i tell it "where" to import the messages from outlook? or what? it's kind of a logistics nightmare the way microsoft designed these.

I think you will find that both Outlook and Outlook Express have to be on the same machine, using the same profile.

Is Outlook available on the desktop?

i'm not sure. the desktop pc runs win-xp-sp2. if outlook didn't come with it, i don't think it's available there. but outlook express is on the desktop pc and outlook is on the laptop. one more question: if i can get outlook express installed on the laptop, and import the emails from outlook, can i then export a file that express on the desktop pc can accept?

Not easaly.

Outlook Express stores it's emails in files called .dbx

There is one file for each folder and are stored in the users profile, if I remeber correctly.

These files can then be copied from one computer to the another.
