XP not sensing and handling compact flash card insertion 2

I have a sandisk USB CF card reader (although I believe that this applies to almost any brand of USB reader).

At one point, when I inserted a CF card (with digital photos on it, for example), XP sensed it and gave me options as to how to handle the contents of the card. One of the options was to download, rename, and sequentially number the images. Recently, that feature seems to have dissappeared (probably overwritten by a software install). Now the OS does not seem to sense that a CF card has been inserted, and does not prompt me at all.

Does anyone know how to reactivate this feature?
Thanks in advance!

Try:

Start, Run, Regedit
Find:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E 967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Export the key as a backup.
Remove the Upper and Lower Filters values.

The Flash Drive does show up just fine, and I can read/write it just fine.

If there exists keys for 'Upper" and "Lower" filters, delete them and reboot.

Ok, no Upper or Lower filters (Still don't understand what these filters are used for). The problem seems to be in the Autorun feature. I can go to the Flash Drive, left click, and get to "autorun." If I tell XP to autorun at this point, I get the same familiar option to download my pictures. This, however, only works manually. Although I set the option to launch the desired program (and XP maintains that option), it will not do it when I plug in a new CF card (and it used to). Still pondering the problem...

See if you can use or adapt these?

Thanks linney,

I'll give it a try. I seem to be able to find all sorts of fixes for CD ROM problems. None for the USB/CF drives, however.

I am having the same problem. I haven't check the Upper and Lower registry settings yet (I'm at work now). I tried the AutoFix program with no luck. It's really annoying, as it works on my laptop and not on my desktop. Also, CDRW and DVDRW drives do work with AutoPlay, just not my SanDisk adapter.
