hi there,
I have just purchased a Sony DW-U14A OEM DVD Writer. Xp seemed to install the drive without any problems, using xps default drivers.

When opening up Nero to write a DVD, all dvd possiblities are greyed out. When I select 'choose a recorder' the drive doesnt appear. Also, in 'My Computer', when a blank DVD+R is inserted, the icon shows a CD and not a DVD icon. The Drive is ok with reading - I can happily watched a DVD using Power DVD.

I have tried the sony website for drivers, but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Call them and demand the drivers for that drive. It sounds like XP doesnt like your drive with its own drivers.

Deinstall NERO completely (even any mentioning of such within the Registry using Regedit), powerdown and up, then reinstall NERO freshly... if this doesn't help any then install the ASPI drivers from Adaptec...

your drive is correctly installed into WinXP...

Try a more recent version of Nero, or a firmware update.

Andy.

Yes, it is NOT likely a driver problem for 3 reasons:

1) Optical drives depend on firmware which is built into the drive. Firmware can be updated, but if the burner is supposed to be XP compatible out of the box (as almost all DVD burners are), then I doubt a firmware update is going to solve your problem.

2) You can see the drive in Explorer

3) You can play a DVD just fine

I agree with Ben. Uninstall Nero, reboot, and reinstall it. The drive must not have been detected by the software during the install. Another thing you can try is to right-click the drive in Explorer and go to Properties. On the "Recording" tab, enable CD recording and relaunch Nero. See if that makes a difference.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your advice. Ive downloaded the latest version of Nero, and so far, so good. Although explorer still doesnt recognise the drive as a dvd writer, I can happily burn them through Nero.

Once again thanks for your help,
