i am having a problem using AOL instant messanger to talk to other people throughout the internet and every few minutes i lose connection to the chat program and have to reconnect to it. i called my ISP and they said its because of the router and they cant troubleshoot it. is there anything i can do to fix this?

I have windows xp professional and i also have blueyonder internet. i use my netgear fa311 network adapter to connect to the internet, which works fine. now when i installed my network card, xp automatically installs the Realtek RTL8139/810X Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC driver, which never works. i get the message "Network cable unplugged" in my network connections window, but my cable isnt unplugged. none of the lights flash on my adapter, which is very odd.

aman sarna,

There is a known issue with some FA311 NICs and XP.
Here is a description from NetGear's site with a workaround to force the loading of the correct driver.
It is not an exact match to your situation but may provide some help.

skyblade,

This link
may help you. Again, it is not an exact match but it deals with all the ports and configuration changes necessary.

Hope that helps.

that is some of the information that i needed. however i have a network connection and that is for a wireless. when i go to me network connection properties it doesnt allow me to toggle into the settings to open up ports of anykind. so i cant let them in. is there any way around that so i can open the ports?

skyblade,

You mentioned a router in your first post. What make/model router is it. YO need to forward the ports in question in the router's setup, not the network connection.

Hope that helps.

the router is a D-Link DI-804. how do i go about forwarding ports to the router? thanks for your time

skyblade,

Open the web interface for the router.
You should see some mechanism to do forwarding. It might be in an advanced section. Not familiar enough with the D-link beyond the concepts.

how do i open up the interface? im sorry, i know just about nothing on routers.
