XP Logon problems

Hi.. I'm running XP Home and when I get to the logon
screen and click on either user it starts loading
settings and then automatically starts logging off. The
same thing happens in Safe Mode, I have done a repair
install but with no luck. I hate to format it as there
are some files needed on the drive. Thanks, Steve
 
The same thing happens when you in Safe Mode logon as Administrator as the named user?
 
Boot from the XP CD, and select the first R(epair) option you get.

When asked, the Administrator is Administrator and just hit enter for the password.

Does it let you into the Recovery Console?

If not, you have no other choice but to reinstall XP. YOu could try the maintenance re-install, but it if were my machine I would do a clean re-installation:
If it does let you into the Recovery Console, restore the registry and then reboot:
