Hello,

I have a computer I need to reinstall Windows XP Pro on. The problem is that my dad lost the XP operating system disk. I was able to get the license key off of the machine through belarc advisor but I was wondering how I can proceed from here. Can I put my Windows XP Pro disk in and use his key? I want to make sure I don't violate and copyright laws, thats why I am asking before I proceed. Thanks in advance.

Nick

You can install XP (using the same OS Disk) on 50 different systems as long as you have 50 different keys. Do not use one key on more than one system.

Take a look at the threads at the end of this post for more info before proceeding. You have to meet certain criteria, when using a Cd that's is different from the original.

Such as being of the same type, with the same SP, the same OS Home keys and Professional Keys are different etc..

Read these threads for some more info:

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

The Posts Vacunita points you to are very knowledgeable, they KEY thing to remember is that Microsoft does not sell the software or the disc, they sell the license to use it and if you buy a single license, you can use it on a single machine, period. The difference is what type of license was purchased determines the version or type of installation that can be done on the machine. There are OEM, Upgrade, Full, or Volume Licensing. Most likely if it is a DELL than it carries an OEM License, so you would only be able to install and OEM version and not a full version or upgrade version. Hope this Helps.

If you need another copy. Save your self some money and get a OEM copy.
