xp keeps rebooting after quick show error message

Recently My pc has started rebooting and restarting after showing a brief error message which I cannot read. I have tried using the recovery console to replace the kernel32.dll file, although the transfer was successfull the same reboot ect keeps on going. Is there any thing else that I can do to stop this or can I reinstall Xp Pro over what already exists without having to re format the hard drive and keeep all data. if this can be done pse tell me how. I cannot get into the OS to chane any of the settings further more i even cannot restart in safe mode or previous configuration

kernel32.exe is not a Microsoft Windows file, it is as steamwhiz mentioned a virus.

You will likely have to reinstall in order to use an antivirus tool.

You will lose your Hotfixes and Service Packs, but not your programs or data.

Thanx guys for the info but Im confused. can some tell me how to reinstall xp pro on top of the existing os as I ve tried the link but do not get anywhere and I dont want to lose all my personal stuff and in addition i can do a virus scan and reinstall the service pack sorry to be a pain

After a virus scan, you go to Windows Update site and have it detect and install needed Hotfixes.

For a virus scan use Trend Micro and Panda as suggested above.
